State DOT Executives from Across the US Meet with Top White House Officials

Transportation investment remains a top tier priority for President Trump and in an effort to shape a transportation package, top administration officials met August 30, 2017 with a wide range of key stakeholder groups, including the CEO’s of more than 20 state departments of transportation. In this Transportation TV News Update, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials President Dave Bernhardt, who also serves as Maine DOT Commissioner, Christy Hall, South Carolina Secretary of Transportation, Wyoming DOT Director William Panos and Colorado DOT Director Shailen Bhatt offer their perspectives on the meeting. Many states are concerned that while measures to increase transportation investment are being approved by state legislatures across the US, the Federal government has not increased user fees to support the troubled Highway Trust Fund in 24 years. According to the Congressional Budget Office an estimated $157 billion in additional revenues would be required to maintain current spending levels plus inflation between 2015 and 2024.Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, the director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney, Special Assistant to the President for Infrastructure Policy DJ Gribbin and Alex Herrgott, the White House Council on Environmental Quality’s associate director for infrastructure spoke at the meeting, to release preliminary details about President Trump’s infrastructure package.
