Traffic engineers are always looking for ways to cut or eliminate highway congestion. Stephanie Pollack, secretary and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts DOT says a $133 million investment to modernize the Massachusetts Turnpike is paying some big dividends across the state. The bold initiative undertaken just before the busy Thanksgiving Holiday was completed in less than a month. By doing away with dozens of toll booths MassDOT has cut congestion saving some motorist an estimated 100 hours a year. . In this edition of News and Design Secretary Pollack tells Transportation TV the initiative did not come without great risk—however she says MassDOT met the challenge with great planning that involved multiple agencies across all levels of state government.
