(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the District Department of Transportation announced that the the bus lanes along H Street NW and I Street NW will be permanent effective November 14, 2019.
The bus lanes, which operate in the right curb lane on H Street NW between 18th Street NW and 14th Street NW and along I Street NW between 13th Street NW and 20th Street NW, are marked with red paint, pavement markings, and signage.
The bus lanes were made permanent after a three-month pilot that began in June 2019, followed by a public comment period in late September. DDOT implemented the following changes based on data collection and public comments:
Up to 70 buses per hour use H and I Streets NW during peak periods. Approximately 40 percent of all bus riders in the District travel on some portion of the H and I Streets NW bus route. Yet, prior to the pilot, those riders experienced travel speeds as slow
as 2.8 miles per hour in some sections.
The H and I Bus Lanes are part of DDOT's ongoing effort to improve bus travel speeds and reliability across the District through
