ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists will encounter a traffic shift on Interstate 35 and ramp closures
at Highway 97 in Columbus beginning on Friday, Aug. 16, weather permitting. The ramp closures were originally set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 14, but were rescheduled due to recent rain delays.
Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 16, northbound I-35 traffic between the I-35W/I-35E split and Highway 97 will be shifted west to the recently paved inside lanes and the northbound
exit and entrance ramps at Highway 97 will close, through late Sept. The ramp closures are necessary to allow crews to resurface the northbound outside lanes of I-35.
While the ramps are closed, motorists should follow posted detours to Broadway Avenue/County Road 2 to exit or access northbound I-35.
In addition, the new loop ramp from westbound Highway 8 to southbound I-35 opens to traffic late Wednesday evening, Aug. 14.
The existing Highway 8 ramp bridge is anticipated to be removed in Sept. during overnight closures of I-35; additional information will be provided when dates have been scheduled
for the work. When construction at the interchange is completed later this fall, the new ramp design will provide additional merge space for motorists entering southbound I-35.
The I-35 North Metro Split project includes resurfacing the existing pavement from the I-35W/I-35E split to Highway 8; replacing the Highway 97 bridge with a
diverging diamond interchange;
replacing the northbound I-35W bridge over I-35E and the westbound Highway 8 bridge over I-35. The project will provide a better ride quality, as well as improve safety and traffic flow at the Highway 97 interchange and is expected to be complete by fall 2019.
