LOWMAN - Crews have nearly completed their work to reopen the Canyon Creek section of Idaho Highway 21 following historic avalanches burying the roadway. There will be a very limited opportunity for members of the media to stop in the Canyon to gather footage
Friday, March 15.
Given the natural dangers in Canyon Creek, ITD will take a single trip - maximum three people - into the area and stop along the way to allow the gathering of photos and video. Those interested in participating in this opportunity must arrive at the ITD
maintenance shed in Lowman (5 River Front Drive) no later than 10:15 a.m. Participants should come prepared with cold weather gear including boots, hats, and gloves.
"During the winter months, there is always a possibility for avalanches to hit the highway," said Avalanche Crew Supervisor Bill Nicholson. "That is why parking in the canyon is strictly prohibited. This rare opportunity is being made available due to improved
conditions and the considerable safety measures we will be taking."
Due to the limited availability for this opportunity, ITD recommends media outlets partner to gather desired resources.
ITD has provided video of crews clearing the avalanches, available for download and rebroadcast.
